How Khulsa Abantwana was born

Khulisa Abantwana – Nurturing the Children

After years of witnessing suffering in my neighborhood and feeling helpless to make a difference, something shifted. As a mother of two young children who enjoy a colorful, vibrant childhood filled with opportunities like surfing, swimming, and music, I couldn’t ignore the growing unfairness I saw around me. It became too much to bear.

One day, I decided to visit Du Noon and speak with some of the local nurseries and schools to learn about their challenges and see how I could help. That visit changed everything.

The women I met that day—caregivers and teachers devoted to the children of Du Noon—are extraordinary. They pour their own time, money, and love into creating a nurturing environment for the children, often at great personal sacrifice. Despite their immense dedication, they struggle to provide even the basics these children deserve.

Their needs are simple, yet essential:

• One good meal a day to support the children’s brain and physical development.
• Books to spark their imaginations and expose them to the limitless possibilities the world has to offer.
• A safe, warm, and supportive environment where they can learn and grow.

I left that visit deeply moved, and Khulisa Abantwana was born.

Having no experience in running a charity, I started small. My first challenge was to feed 350 children who would have gone hungry during the Easter holidays. With the help of friends, we raised enough money to provide daily sandwiches and fruit. It was a roaring success!

Next came the challenge of replacing the roof of a local nursery, which was leaking badly. With winter rapidly approaching, there was no time to waste. Together, we raised funds to put a new roof on the Bubbly Educare Centre, just in time to protect Andisiwe and her children from a wet and stormy season.

Knowing that we had made a tangible difference—that these children were safe, warm, and cared for—was life-changing. It inspired me and those around me to do even more.

Khulisa Abantwana is a testament to what can happen when we decide to take action, no matter how small. Together, we can nurture brighter futures for all children, one step at a time.
